Trilogies are massive, epic, and most of the time some of the finest films in history to hit the big screen. Some of the finest works of fiction are always contained in books which is why filmmakers are making it a more realistic approach by making it into movies. Just like the three-act structure of a play, a movie or a book, a trilogy represents three different parts of the entire story as a whole.
There is a beginning, a middle, and lastly, the end. Usually, a trilogy is properly told and are always enhanced with its story and the depth of it which is more than just a standalone work.
Check out The Matrix trilogy where the first installment is everything that what makes a good movie should always be and it was a bit of a refreshing way to tell an exciting story with visually entertaining cinematic enhancements that were not seen in cinemas before. The Matrix also presented everyone with new and engaging characters which were fun to watch and interesting to learn more about them, as it also boasted a not so usual deep screenplay which not just entertaining, but also made an entire generation of moviegoers pop a question in their head about their true form of existence in the world.
However, The Matrix was not able to hold up in as high regard as it once was because the sequels ruined it according to some film critics and fans because the Matrix Reloaded and the Matrix Revolution dim its initial impact because it did not live to everyone’s expectation and the originality of its first part which is why it is very crucial in watching trilogies knowing that fans are very demanding and very intricate in the next two chapters of the first movie they watch in order for them to tell if the trilogy is worth their money or not.
The best trilogy that everyone agrees on both movie critics and fans alike is The Lord of the Rings trilogy which is the Fellowship of the Ring, the Two Towers, and the Return of the King courtesy of New Line Cinema based on legendary British folklore novelist J.R.R Tolkien.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy was one of the most profitable box office movies of all time because it never failed the fans to learn something new in terms of plots, characters and the connection between the three movies that New Line Cinema delivered remarkably.
An honorable mention is the Bourne trilogy comprised of Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy, and the Bourne Ultimatum which ended in ultimately a high note because of its ability to provide the fans a solid sequel that exceeds the first one and the other.
This kind of strategy also worked pretty well with Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy where the first installment, Batman Begins was great for introducing a new modern version of The Batman, the second installment exceeded the first one tremendously, thanks to the agent of chaos, The Joker which was portrayed by the late Heath Ledger, and lastly, the Dark Knight Rises where a poetic but brutal villain Bane played by Tom Hardy also wowed the fans.
